Using Radios for SCADA, Protection and System Automation
Last year at the Distributech conference, we had the privilege to present a presentation on "Using Radios for SCADA, Protection, and System Automation" in electrical distribution systems. The presentation focuses on the use of radios for SCADA, protection, and system automation in electrical distribution systems, particularly those on military installations across the country. The presentation is designed for individuals with limited experience with radios, aiming to expose them to the capabilities and potential applications of this technology.
Key topics covered include Application Considerations, Cyber Security, O&M Considerations, Radio Configurations, Types of Radios, Path Analysis, and Radio Case Studies. The considerations for deploying radios in projects are discussed, highlighting scenarios where radios are a cost-effective and practical alternative to fiber optics. The advantages of radios, including cost savings, reduced construction time, and sufficient bandwidth for applications, are presented alongside potential drawbacks such as line-of-sight dependencies and range limitations.
The presentation concludes with case studies, where real-world projects involving radio applications are discussed, highlighting challenges faced and solutions implemented.
